What We Do

Culture For One organizes and takes a small group of children or a single child living in foster care to experience a theatrical, music, or dance performance or to visit a museum or a company involved in culture. We also provide arts scholarships, workshops, career connections, and creative projects, as well as individual encouragement and support.

To date, we have provided more than 4,400 children and teens with small group and individual arts opportunities. This includes nearly 1,750 guided excursions and arts scholarships for youth to study at the International Center of Photography, the Arts Students League, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's Ailey Extension, among others.

Culture For One works in collaboration with NYC foster care agencies, the first of which has been Forestdale, Inc., located in Queens, New York that annually serves 700 children who have exceptionally challenging lives. Many are unaware of a bigger world and the possibilities beyond their immediate surroundings.

Anstiss Agnew Executive Director of Forestdale, Inc., a local foster agency has said:

Culture For One is a simple, but powerful idea. It provides opportunities for children to develop their cultural literacy, confidence, creativity, and educational goals. It also narrows the opportunity gap by ensuring that even the most vulnerable and impoverished children experience New York City’s rich cultural life.

The work of Culture For One is critical to the future development and long-term growth of youth in foster care.  Exposure to the arts is key to assuring them a strong, successful transition to adulthood and freeing them from the intergenerational cycle of foster care, poverty, and hopelessness.

Providing cultural experiences is a priceless source of inspiration and motivation for these children.
